Title:
Die Praxis der Photographie mit Gelatine-Emulsionen [The Practice of Photography with Gelatine Emulsions]
Summary
This item contains Volume 3, Part 10 of Josef Maria Eder's Ausführliches Handbuch der Photographie [Comprehensive Handbook of Photography], Second Handbook Edition, and the Second Volume Edition, published in 1903.
Editorial Note. Ausführliches Handbuch der Photographie was published in three Handbook Editions (HEd): the First Edition (1882–1888), the Second Edition (1891–1903), and the Third Edition (1905–1932). Individual volumes were revised and reissued independently, often progressing through additional editions of their own. Consequently, references such as "Fourth Edition" or "Fifth Edition" apply to the individual volume or part-volume, not to the Handbuch as a whole. Throughout this bibliography, HEd denotes the Handbook Edition, while VEd (Volume Edition) denotes the edition of an independently revised volume or part-volume.
Ausführliches Handbuch der Photographie was Josef Maria Eder's monumental multi-volume survey of photographic science, technology, and history. First published by Wilhelm Knapp of Halle an der Saale in the 1880s and repeatedly expanded over the following decades, the work became one of the most important reference sources in photographic literature. Covering subjects ranging from photographic chemistry and optics to actinometry, sensitometry, printing processes, colour photography, and the history of the medium, Eder's handbook documented both contemporary practice and the scientific foundations of photography.
A distinguishing feature of Eder's work was his extensive use of original sources. Dissatisfied with the incompleteness of earlier histories, he spent many years examining early scientific papers, books, patents, journals, and archival materials, often tracing discoveries back to their first published accounts. He also sought to present photography as an international achievement, drawing upon contributions from Britain, France, Germany, Austria, and many other countries rather than concentrating on a single national tradition. As a result, the Handbuch remains not only a technical reference but also an important historical source for the development of photographic science from its origins through the early twentieth century.
